Lot 281 , A Japanese ivory figure of a courtier, Meiji period, signed Masatoshi, 16.5cm

A Japanese ivory figure of a courtier, Meiji period, signed Masatoshi, 16.5cm

A Japanese ivory figure of a courtier, Meiji period, signed Masatoshi, clutching a sword in his left hand, engraved two character signature, 16.5cm
Estimate £250-350

There is slight yellowish staining to areas of the carving, many of the small medallions on the courtiers clothing are inlaid circles of ivory which have then been over engraved to match, there is also an inset section of ivory at the bottom of his robes, this is probably where natural age cracks in the ivory have been covered up by the carver, otherwise in good condition.
