A Japanese bronze figure of a fisherman, 19th century, the fisherman holding a rod in his right hand and a fish in his left, the naturalistic base with two colour patination, cast seal mark to base, wood stand, total height 53.5cm

Provenance - A. E. Bateman; thence by family descent.
Bateman was the representative for the prominent British merchant firm Dodwell & Co. in Kyobashi in the 1920s. The firm operated in Shanghai and Yokohama from the late 19th to mid 20th century, acting as a major import/export and shipping agent.

Condition:
The wire for the fishing rod has been tied around his wrist and probably would have been in the fish‘s mouth originally, no damage or restoration detected, the original wood stand has been sun bleached around the edge.
