Lot 66 , A Japanese bronze and silver inlaid travelling calligraphy set, 19th century, 3.5cm

A Japanese bronze and silver inlaid travelling calligraphy set, 19th century, 3.5cm

A Japanese bronze and silver inlaid travelling calligraphy set, 19th century, in the form of a three case inro, decorated with blossoming branches, with a removable small brush or pen and hinged compartments that open to reveal old sealing wax and ink, with embroidered case, height 5.5cm, together with a peach stone netsuke carved in relief with a crab, 3.5cm
Estimate £200-300

Please note this is not an inro as the sections do not come apart, the two lower sections have hinged covers which open up to reveal fitted compartments, the hinged cover on top has been pushed in at the hinge and has split away from the top panel very slightly, this probably could be sorted by a good restorer, the red stained ojime could be from a nut or could be ivory, very difficult to say and the carved walnut has a slight chip to the edge of the opening, otherwise in good condition. The removeable brush / pen holder appears to missing a pusher to extend the pen / brush.
