A Japanese Meiji lacquer writing box, the lid decorated with five puppies playing in a garden, underside of the lid with bird perched beside a prunus tree, interior with removable tray decorated with bamboo, 23.5. x 21cm, height 4.75cm

Black lacquering to the lid patchy with light surface scratching, bottom edge of lid has been repainted black, looks like it has been broken at some point and overpainted but damage still showing at corners, in fact all four corners of the lid damaged, inside of lid with bird and plant decoration good, within the box the removable tray to the right decorated with bamboo with very small marks to the rim, inkstone panel has clearly been used for some time and shows rubbing to the front edge and has a signature to the underside of the inkstone, small water dropper is gilt bronze modelled a seated goose and a little rubbed to the gilding, inside rim of main box a little worn at the corners, the top edge again shows signs of damage and over painting with cracks running at the corners.
