Lot 67 , A George III mahogany eight day chiming longcase clock, 7ft 5in.

A George III mahogany eight day chiming longcase clock, 7ft 5in.

A George III mahogany eight day chiming longcase clock, the 12 inch arched brass dial with silvered chapter ring, strike / silent and subsidiary seconds, engraved to the centre with tulips, the case with later Edwardian marquetry decoration, movement with later clarion striking on eight bells, 7ft 5in.
Estimate £800-1,200

Case looks to be an original George III mahogany case which has then later been embellished by the Edwardians, the marquetry is showing small flecks of white mould in some of the cavities particularly on the trunk and foot, finials look like they have been later gold painted, hood door does not entirely fit perfectly, slightly bulging out at the top with one tiny chip to the veneer, back right column to hood has come loose, metal fret work panels to the sides of the hood look like later additions, silk has perished, dial looks untouched for many years, spandrels are a little tight for it and look to be later Edwardian additions, hands have been painted black, otherwise dial shows oxidisation, movement shows Edwardian adaption with later clarion striking on a gong and eight bells, looks to have been overhauled within the past 10 years or so, complete but not tested for timekeeping or going, comes with a brass cased pendulum, winding key, trunk door key and three iron weights. Base of clock has two horizontal cracks running through the front, foot looks to be an Edwardian replacement, overall this clock is looking a little neglected and will need some repolishing and attention but should restore to good effect.
