A Gauge One live steam North Eastern Railway 4-4-2 Atlantic tender locomotive, No.731, four cylinder compound, the original locomotive designed by W.M. Smith, Wilson Worsdell’s Chief Draftsman in 1906, with Walschaerts valve gear and piston valves.
The well detailed model built by Michael Wrottesley and Harold Denyer (H B Models) based on original drawings held by the National Railway Museum, with contributions from Dave Brutnell (chimney, dome and safety valve cover), Howard Mawby (Project boiler) and Mike Weedon. Wheel castings by Locosteam and Keith Cousins, and transfers and numbers from Guilplates
The model is a working four cylinder compound, with high pressure cylinders outside (11mm bore and 16mm stroke) and low pressure cylinders inside (13.5mm bore and 20mm stroke), but with inside slip eccentric valve gear and slide valves. The inside valve gear actuates the valves to the high pressure outside cylinders through rocker arms, as on the prototype, other details include sprung buffers and axle boxes, hand pump in the tender, etc., together with a plywood carrying case
