Lot 199 , A Chinese jichimu and soapstone overlaid rectangular box, late 19th century, 20.5cm, re-glued
A Chinese jichimu and soapstone overlaid rectangular box, late 19th century, the cover decorated with a crane in flight above peonies and rockwork, the sides with peony sprays, 20.5cm, re-glued
Estimate £70-90
Provenance: William Moule and his family, who were Christian missionaries in Ningpo (Ningbo) and Shanghai in the late 19th and early 20th century; thence by descent.
All of the joints of the box have been later reglued with some old glue around the areas, all of the inlay is present, it is possible there is a little bit of replacement soapstone inlay to some of the branches on floral sprig on one side panel, the cover top panel is slightly bowed and lifting at each end with two associated age cracks to the timber going across the rockwork, otherwise of reasonable patina.
