Lot 82 , A Chinese hand scroll painting on silk of five of the horses of Mu Wang, image 28 x 263cm
A Chinese hand scroll painting on silk of five of the horses of Mu Wang, each horse being held by a groom and with an inscription describing their attributes, inscription and owner's seal marks to one end, image 28 x 263cm
Estimate £700-900
Provenance: the estate of the late Jean-Claude Lepileur (1926-2016)
There are a number of small tears and chips to the paper on the very right edge borders of the scroll, to the actual image itself there is a tear through the calligraphy between the very far right horse and second to right horse which has been stuck with tape, the second to right horse there is some wear to the silk below the horses head and there is another tear to the paper beneath the belly of the second to right horse, otherwise the image itself has some slight creases and occasional minor stains and losses to the paint, the whole of the painted area of the scroll with the horses is discoloured and the backgrounds quite a brown colour, it is definitely an older painting which has been remounted and on the left side of the scroll is an inscription with collector's seals, a large portion of the scroll to the left is just plain paper.
