Lot 203 , A Chinese chalcedony vase, in imitation of coral, H. 19.5cm, carved wood stand

A Chinese chalcedony vase, in imitation of coral, H. 19.5cm, carved wood stand

A Chinese chalcedony vase, in imitation of coral, skillfully carved to the contrasting coral red and creamy white layers of the stone as a fruiting prunus tree bough with lingzhi fungus at the base, H. 19.5cm, carved wood stand
Estimate £800-1,200

There are numerous inclusions and natural veining in the stone which the carver has skilfully adapted into the carving of the piece. A little grubby in places, it is possible that one small section at the front of the vase has broken off along a vein and been reglued but otherwise in reasonable condition, the wood stand has a loss to one side possibly a leaf or a woody stem.
