compare similar figures of Guanyin dated to the Ming dynasty in the catalogue for Chinese Ivories from the Shang to the Qing dynasty, an exhibition organised by The Oriental Ceramic Society jointly with The Britsih Museum 24 May to 19 August 1984, Figs. 27 to 35.


There is evidence that the figure was once gilt-lacquered all over with remnants of the gilding and lacquer to the jewellery around her neck and the robes at her lower legs and remnants in the folds of the drapery, there is a fine age crack to the left side of her head, the head has been broken off at the neck and reattached, the head dress and lower section of her legs are made in sections which have been attached later but appear to be original.
