Lot 23 , A Cambodian sandstone seated figure of Buddha Muchalinda

A Cambodian sandstone seated figure of Buddha Muchalinda

A Cambodian sandstone seated figure of Buddha Muchalinda, possibly Angkor period, Boyon style, 13th century, the head of the figure framed by a seven headed naga, seated on the coiled serpent's body, height excl. stand 64cm (25.25in.)
Estimate £300-500

There is general weathering to the relief carved decoration to the front of the figure and some losses to the right knee, the scaling of the serpent is more obvious on the right side of the figure and particularly on the reverse of the figure where it has been sheltered from weathering more, there are a few white marks to the back of the figure, obviously the figure has come off a plinth or something larger at some stage in its life.
