In 1642 Charles II, then Prince of Wales fled to Jersey, Elizabeth Castle and stayed at the Governor’s house for two months before fleeing to France. The governor’s house was where Sir Walter Raleigh lived in 1600. Charles then returned in 1649 after his father’s death and was proclaimed King there. The three feather motifs in the embroidery may represent Prince of Wales Feathers. Embroideries etc were often displayed in private spaces like bedchambers to show importance of rank and title.
