19th century Scottish School Portrait of a Highlander, 30 x 22in., unframed

19th century Scottish School
oil on canvas,
Portrait of a Highlander,
indistinctly signed verso,
30 x 22in., unframed
Estimate £300-500

Oil on the original canvas in somewhat neglected condition, canvas is now starting to undulate a little and showing some creasing towards the top right corner and a hint of stretcher marking particularly across the top, elsewhere there is a 1 inch tear towards the lower left corner along with further small tear holes running across the bottom, the paint is untouched and rather dirty, with a fine craquelure running through the skin tones which looks like it is just starting to lift in the thicker areas around the eye, elsewhere in the darker areas there is some fine flaking and rising of the paint in the blackest parts, notably around the edge of his hat and towards the back of the hat, appears not to be signed to the front of the work however there is a very loose signature on the back, not framed.
Overall in need of some restoration but a fine quality work.
