19th century French School
oil on canvas,
Portrait of a bearded man,
24 x 20in.
Estimate £200-300

Oil on original canvas which now sags and undulates with prominent stretcher marks showing and various other radial and otherwise craquelure lines running throughout the paint, a dark black overpaint has been applied across the bottom inch to 2 inches of the work, elsewhere paint looks original with a dirty and discoloured varnish and numerous dirt spots and specks, canvas is English so probably pointing to an English painter produced by C. Davy of 83 Newman Street, Oxford Street, London, otherwise what looks like the remnant of a depository label on the back of the frame which is probably the original gilt gesso example and has been heavily overpainted with gold paint.
Provenance: Local private vendor.
