Oil on original canvas which has an indistinct makers stamp on the back and is now rather saggy, undulation showing to both top corners, and a stretcher mark showing across the top and down the right side, paint is very dirty and has a fine but stable craquelure running through the blue of the sky, the flesh tones and here and there elsewhere. Lower left corner has seen some flaking but no sign of any retouching at any point.
Housed in a 19th century giltwood and gesso frame which is now rather tatty.
Attribution to American School based on style, it has also been suggested that this may equally be Baltic region.
Comes for sale from a deceased estate in Brighton.
