Estimate £3,000-5,000

Note: In 1879 Cole's dealer, William Agnew, commissioned the artist to undertake a linked series of paintings of the Thames 'from its source to the sea'. This painting however, despite its compliance to the brief, is not listed in the Royal Academy records for the period. Cole was not always concerned with accurately representing topography and preferred to depict the Thames Valley in its picturesque pre-Industrial state.

Oil on canvas cleaned and relined relatively recently, now in very good condition with no faults noted, signed lower left, title on the slip with additional information Exhibited Royal Academy, housed in what looks to be the original gilt gesso frame which has a few small losses but overall is in good condition.

Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid.
