Charles Fleetwood Varley for Guild of Handicraft. An Arts & Crafts copper and enamel box, w. 26cm, hinge detached

Charles Fleetwood Varley for Guild of Handicraft. An Arts & Crafts copper and enamel box, the slightly domed rectangular cover inset with an enamel panel decorated with a lake scene, on eight mortar board shaped legs, w. 26cm, hinge detached
Estimate £800-1,200

Please note that it has been suggested that the enamel panel could be a continental example as the trees aren't typical of Fleetwood Varley's work which may also mean the box is Continental, there is some scratching and scuffing to the enamel particularly on the raised centre but no cracks detected, top left it is not clear if there is a small chip on the corner of the enamel or this is the way it has been finished, it has been inset with a wood panel to the back with some metal pins, the piano type hinge has detached away from the body with some old solder around the hinge and where the hinge joins the body, the hinge has split in a couple of places but this could probably be repaired, the box base itself is slightly bent and knocked on the edges, the wood lining has some scuffs and minor chipping around the edge, the feet all appear to be attached ok, the base is inset with a velvet covered wood panel, the velvet is heavily worn and discoloured and showing the wood panel in one area where some wood has chipped away where the pin has gone in, wear to the bottom of the feet consistent with age and use, the colour of the copper is of a nice brown patina, please note it looks as though the feet and the rectangular supports going upward are made of brass or bronze.
