Publisher’s original black cloth, upper board with gilt-stamped medallion, spine lettered in gilt; in the first-state dust jacket, without the subsequently overprinted acknowledgement to Fleming and jacket artist Kenneth Lewis, and retaining the original 10s. 6d. net price.

Fleming’s second James Bond novel. First-impression issue point with “Reliefs” for “Relief” on p. 120, line 1. The first-state dust jacket is without the subsequently added two-line acknowledgement to Fleming and Kenneth Lewis on the front flap. The rear panel carries the Casino Royale advertisement noting its “Second Impression”, with the Irish Times review in the spaced setting, “author’s skill”; no priority is established between this and the unspaced “author’sskill” setting.

Publisher’s original black cloth clean and well preserved, with the gilt medallion to the upper board and gilt lettering to the spine remaining bright. Bookseller’s ticket (Foyles) to front pastedown. Contents clean, with some slight toning to edges. In the original first-state dust jacket, retaining the 10s. 6d. net price; jacket with some toning and light signs of handling, particularly to the pale areas and flaps, but presenting well overall. Small area of expert restoration to folds on dust wrapper with no loss. The volume is additionally preserved in a custom-made leather clam-shell box.
