Launched as the merchant ship Westerwald in 1937 and commissioned as the Kriegsmarine tanker Nordmark in 1939, supporting German surface raiders in the Arctic and Atlantic during World War II. Surrendered to the British in May 1945 and initially considered for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary as Northmark. Refitted and commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Bulawayo (Pennant A121) in July 1947, named in honour of Southern Rhodesia's war effort
