This Booke teachyng all people to governe them in health is translated out of the Latin tongue into English, by Thomas Paynell... ?edition]. black letter, 2 tail piece decorations and 1 decorated initial letter; (lacks title and 6 of the ?16 preliminary leaves, text with 166 ex 167 ff.); newly rebound calf backed marbled boards, gilt ruled spine with maroon label, sm. 8vo. [by Wyllam How, for Abraham Veale, later 16th cent.] *well known commentary (by Arnoldus de Villa Nova, ca. 1240-1411) on the earlier mediaeval poem on the preservation of health. First published 1528, this is one of several Paynell editions; this copy with the ownerhip (fore margin fol. lxxxix verso) of Major Brown/Battle Abbey 1640; the Brownes had been granted the monastic estate at the Dissolution, relinquishing it in the early 18th century.

(but lacks f. lxiv); B-H8, I7, K-Y8; prelims - (x)ff., with contents: part preface (the 3rd and 4th leaves of 4), Table (8 leaves, A-Di and M to end), irregular A register, Preface and Table share 2nd leaf. Some light stains and other marks (mostly marginal) intermittently, first leaf and 3 following with marginal/edge damage (neat repairs) with some headline loss, some gutter worm (in 2 places on some 26ff.), but poss only 3/4 word loss overall; stain top rh. corner some 10ff (mostly marginal).
