James McCabe, Royal Exchange, London, 2785. An exceptionally fine and richly engraved gilt-brass English giant carriage clock with running seconds indication, housed in a fully relief-engraved case, complete with travelling case. The case profusely engraved in deep relief with scrolling foliage and flowerheads throughout, surmounted by a folding handle with ribbed centre grip suspended between curved supports on engraved mounts, above a shaped cornice enclosing the bevelled glass inspection panel, the repeat button passing through a brass ferrule set within the glass. The substantial bevelled glass side panels are framed by engraved uprights and raised on a stepped base. The solid rear door is similarly engraved with foliate scrolls and flowerheads and fitted with a fast/slow regulation slide with engraved scale and fleur-de-lys pointer, together with strike/silent selection and apertures for winding and hand-setting with engraved directional arrows.
The 9cm rectangular dial signed and numbered within a framed cartouche above numeral VI, with Roman chapter ring and subsidiary running seconds dial intersecting the upper numeral, the blued steel quatrefoil hands set against an engraved scrollwork centre.
The substantial twin chain fusee movement with heavy plates secured to the base by L-shaped brackets and united by five turned pillars, the going train incorporating Harrison’s maintaining power and regulated by a large shaped gilt platform with heavy cut compensated bimetallic balance and underslung English lever escapement. The strike train sounding and repeating on a circular-section blued steel coiled gong.

Together with the original brass-bound mahogany travelling case with padded felt-lined interior and winding key, both numbered 2785
