Lot 493 , A Chinese civil official’s mandarin Winter hat, nuanmao, late Qing dynasty

A Chinese civil official’s mandarin Winter hat, nuanmao, late Qing dynasty, later covered in long threaded silk and ‘Peking’ knot embroidery, with foliage and flowers, red silk tassel to the top, 24cm diameter, worn and some alterations, displayed under a glass dome.

Card inscribed ‘18th century mandarin‘s hat brought from China, reputedly by the ancestor trained in the picture on glass dome on glass done at Canton in 1774 who is almost certainly Thomas Fry, captain of the honourable East India company (died 1781), the hat together with a blue silk jacket were probably a present from his stepson John Helga rock who was 12 years old in 1775. The hat was repaired (possibly the embroidered silk was recovered) by Violet Robinson in the early 20th century.

The hat appears to have been recovered in 19th century embroidered silk with some alterations to the lining on the interior, there are losses to the silk and some messy stitching around the edges
