A Chinese embroidered silk ‘hundred bird’ table screen, late 19th / early 20th century, the silk panel embroidered with birds, amid peonies and rockwork, on an ivory ground, the hongmu frame carved in relief with gourd vines and bats, the trestle end stand carved with Buddhist lions and birds amid foliage, height 85.5cm, width 58cm, typical small splits to timber

Provenance - A. E. Bateman; thence by family descent.
Bateman was the representative for the prominent British merchant firm Dodwell & Co. in Kyobashi in the 1920s. The firm operated in Shanghai and Yokohama from the late 19th to mid 20th century, acting as a major import/export and shipping agent.

The embroidered silk colours are a little faded, the wood frame has typical small splits, otherwise in reasonable condition.
