A pair of Chinese yellow ground famille rose jars and covers, Jiaqing - Daoguang period, early 19th century, each of baluster form, painted two shaped reserves with flowers with birds, peonies and grape vines, the reverse with a duck on a pond, on a dotted yellow ground decorated with flower sprays, with turquoise and pink ground diaper pattern borders, the domed covers with chrysanthemum decorated finials, underglaze blue double circle to base, height 42cm, covers repaired

Provenance - A. E. Bateman; thence by family descent.
Bateman was the representative for the prominent British merchant firm Dodwell & Co. in Kyobashi in the 1920s. The firm operated in Shanghai and Yokohama from the late 19th to mid 20th century, acting as a major import/export and shipping agent.

Condition:
One of the vases has a splinter chip to the rim. Both vases have typical minor glaze and manufacturing imperfections. Both of the covers have sections which have been broken off and messily glued with some glaze losses and filler around the immediate area (please see photos), otherwise in good condition.
