A Chinese wucai ‘dragon and phoenix’ dish, Qianlong seal mark, but late 19th century, painted with a confronting five claw dragon medallion surrounded by two dragons and two phoenixes amid flames and foliage, the border with the eight Buddhist emblems and ruyi heads, the base with apocryphal six character seal mark, diameter 29.2cm

Provenance - A. E. Bateman; thence by family descent. Bateman was the representative for the prominent British merchant firm Dodwell & Co. in Kyobashi in the 1920s. The firm operated in Shanghai and Yokohama from the late 19th to mid 20th century, acting as a major import/export and shipping agent.
