Inscribed to the upper left of canvas, Alan Bellingham of Levens, Westmorland, dyed at St Germain, France, 1692. There are several areas of overpainting and re-touching throughout. Some paint chips and flaking to the edges and lower centre of the canvas; canvas with old re-lining. There is a hole to the canvas on the right of the drapery. The painting is dirty and would benefit from a clean
