A massive Chinese blue and white jar, Wanli six character mark and of the period (1572-1620), the central band painted with four winged dragons amid in different poses, amid scrolled clouds, the shoulder with reserves of peaches, pomegranates, persimmon and flowers on brocaded band, the lower register with a band of lappets, the unglazed base with central glazed roundel with underglaze blue six character mark ‘Da Ming Wanli nian zhi’, 56cm high to rim, associated Wanli period cover, total height 63cm, damage to neck

Condition:
Nearly half of the short neck has been broken off and is now missing, with two visible metal staples holding in an additional smaller triangular section in place, some evidence of some old restoration around this section. Some unglazed patches around the luting line join just below the shoulder, with some scratching to the glaze. One large drizzled iron spot to one side. There is an additional luting join approximately one third of the way up on the body with some additional unglazed patches. The cover is Wanli but is too small for the jar. The cover has been broken into A number of sections with some old staple repairs holding it together. The finials is missing and has been ground off, glaze losses around the edge of the cover.
