John Wycliffe (circa 1330-1384) and his followers began translating the Bible from the Latin Vulgate in 1384. This act defied the Catholic Church's policy at the time, which prohibited making the entire Bible available in the vernacular language. Possessing Wycliffe's translation became a crime. Posthumously declared a heretic, Wycliffe was a precursor f the Protestant Reformation. The Oxford edition of the Wycliffe Bible is the first printed edition of his complete translation, whereas earlier printed editions included only the New Testament.
