A George III silver tankard, by Thomas Chawner, of baluster form, the domed cover with pierced scroll thumbpiece and later? engraved initials, the body engraved with a full rigged sailing ship, the base engraved with presentation inscription, ' The Gift of the Owners of the ship Hope, to Capt. Geo. Bates, London, August 26th, 1784', London, 1784, 33.5oz, height 8in.
Estimate £600-800
Hope was built at Chester in 1775 and owned in 1784 by Wood & Co, rated A1 by Lloyd's surveyors and trading that year between Liverpool & London under the command of Captain Bates. By 1790 she had changed and was running out of Liverpool to Maryland (USA). This tankard was given to Capt. Bates in 1784, no doubt by the owners of 'Hope' to mark the safe return of the vessel after adverse weather conditions crossing the Atlantic, nearly wrecked her.
Would benefit from a good clean, otherwise in good order. Hallmarks on lid interior quite rubbed.
