Oil on original canvas which is slightly sagging, paint very dirty with bitumous bubbling in the darker areas, a broad craquelure running throughout and some flaking at 1 and 9 o'clock, a short 4 inch tear just to the right of his cravat, another short tear approximately 1 inch lower left, housed in the original gilt gesso frame which is now very tatty, relatively recent hand written labels verso giving details of the work and saying commissioned by Edward Folger Starbuck.
