Lot 536 , 18th century English School, oil on canvas, Portrait of a lady wearing a blue dress, painted to the oval, 73 x 59cm
18th century English School, oil on canvas, Portrait of a lady wearing a blue dress, painted to the oval, 73 x 59cm
Estimate £400-600
Oil on canvas relined probably 20 - 30 years ago or so, canvas remains tight, paint is rather dirty, clearly has suffered an extensive tear running from to the right of 12 'clock right the way down to the sitters left shoulder and then across near horizontally for a further 2 inches, this is obviously why it was relined, it has been retouched but the damage is still visible, otherwise paint looks to have been a little rubbed over the years, there is some fine but stable craquelure running through the flesh tones, frame looks to be an original 18th century carved pine frame that has been stripped of its gilding and gesso
painting is 73 x 59cm, frame over 93 x 78cm.
