Oil on canvas relined 30 - 40 years ago or more, canvas remains tight, paint looks rather dirty with a fine but stable craquelure running throughout, no obvious signs of any overpainting, signed just to the left of 6 o'clock, housed in a 20th century part ebonised and giltwood frame which has some losses, an old typed label verso saying the date below the signature is 1679, the tail of the 9 was cut off when the canvas was relined.
Comes for sale from a local private collection, formerly the property of Dennis Ward, a connoisseur of some repute in the Lewes area.
