A near pair of Staffordshire pearlware figures of lions, c.1800-10, each resting a paw upon a spear, on leaf moulded square plinth bases painted in imitation of marble, length 32cm, restorations
Estimate £1,500-2,000
This model is derived from a pair of large marble statues now located at the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence.
The first model's tail has been broken in to several sections and messily re-stuck. There are two cracks to the base emanating from firing cracks underneath. There are various small glaze flakes, some of which are later coloured in, and losses to the turquoise enamel around the plinth and to the gilding on the ball.
The second figure's tail has been broken in to several sections and messily re-stuck. One of the lion's canine teeth is lacking and there are losses to the green enamel around the plinth and to the gilding on the ball.
The figures are highly decorative nonetheless.
