A mid 19th century Reformed Gothic oak breakfront open bookcase, probably made by J.G.Crace, with crocheted finials to the frieze, fitted with adjustable open shelves, flanked by stop-chamfered and fish-scale pattern pilasters, the wing sections inset with linenfold side panels, the bracket feet with foliate and berry carved spandrels, W.7ft 10in.
Estimate £5,000-7,000

Literature: The design of this bookcase bears similarities to a pen and ink sketch, E.1551-1912, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, by A.W.N. Pugin
which he describes as 'Winged bookcase; china; books'. The cornice, fish scale pilasters and carved spandrels to the bracket feet are very similar although his design incorporates doors with linenfold panels. Another Pugin design for a dwarf bookcase, museum no. E.1552-1912, has similar linenfold side panels and stop-chamfered pilasters.

This bookcase principally comes apart into three sections, the central double row of shelves and then two side section single rows, therefore the largest piece is width 4ft 8in. height 9ft 9in. depth 1ft 4.5in. Other loose parts are the pierced fret work crestings which each slot in.
Condition is good, there are a number of small scattered minor dents and knocks throughout with overall slightly more rubbing as is to be expected at the base but overall this is in very good order.
