Madame Butterfly, composted by Puccini, first performed 1904. The Plot: Temporarily in port, US Lieutenant Pinkerton seduces the beautiful Butterfly, promising to return one day and marry her. He does, but with an American bride. Butterfly hands over their son and commits suicide.
