The blade of the Patu Paraoa is known as the Rau, which gave rise to the term for conquest, raupatu, as lands were conquered using the blade of the club.
This type of short handled club was used as a striking weapon, thrust straight form the shoulder delivering a blow to the enemys temple, or in grasping their hair, the patu could be driven up under the jaw or ribs.
