Born in London 1897 and graduated from University College London. He served with distinction in the 7th Battalion London Regiment during the First World War in France and Flanders, after which he joined the Colonial Administrative Service in Nigeria, later becoming the Commander of the Nigerian Defence Force. Between 1942 and 1944 he was appointed Colonial Secretary in Gibralter. In 1947 he was awarded the Medaille de la Resistance avec Rosette for his assisting the French in Cameroon and French Equatorial Africa. From 1946 to 1954 he was Governor and Commander in Chief of the Falkland Islands. In civilian life he was a director of the Leverhulme Trust and Patron of the Royal College of Surgeons.
