Lot 469 , Mid 19th century English School Portrait of a cavalry officer standing beside his horse 24 x 28in.
Mid 19th century English School
oil on canvas
Portrait of a cavalry officer standing beside his horse
24 x 28in.
Estimate £400-600
Oil on original canvas which appears to be stamped on the back with a crown motif above a monogram and the worn Linens SJS, canvas remains tight but clearly has a number of tears, holes and dents as can be seen in the photographs, oil itself is very dirty with slight undulation and a fine craquelure throughout which might just be starting to lift particularly towards the top left corner, nothing is known about the identity of the officer although presumably details of his uniform might help, there is an indistinct inscription on the red roll mounted behind the saddle. No sign of any signature, looks to be details of a classical building or pillar to the right and a sunset landscape to the left, housed in a plain gilt frame which again has suffered from some losses.
