Rather dirty with foxing throughout, most notably down the right side. Mould and dirt on the inside of the glass.
Mount discoloured and foxed. Frame looks original and in good order.
Back board bowing outwards. has a period label for 'Vandermeersch & Wimphen of Port Louis, Ile Maurice' also a typed label relating to the work being offered within the family before being sold on.
Obituary is in a non-matching gilt gesso frame, in good order.

Apparently this work was withdrawn from a Bonhams sale as they were not sure that the sitter was James Laidley - please see the Australian Dictionary of Biography online entry where another portait looks to be a very good match for this work; http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/laidley-james-2317
