Lot 364 , A George III mahogany secretaire bookcase, W.3ft 10in D.1ft 11in. H.8ft 6in.
A George III mahogany secretaire bookcase, with swan's neck pediment and astragal glazed doors, two dummy and three graduated long drawers, W.3ft 10in D.1ft 11in. H.8ft 6in.
Estimate £1,200-1,800
Some losses to the foliate scrolling of the swans neck pediment, central urn is a little small and may well be a later replacement, pediment has also been broken off and re-attached, old cracks and splits can be seen horizontally through the bottom of it. Top of bookcase is a very good match for the chest below and these do appear to have started life together, the mahogany being evenly matched as is the panel work to the back, no key to the glazed doors, old lining of worn and faded velvet within, interior a good rich colour, no key for drawer locks, handles all look original, overall of a even dark to reddish mahogany tone, a little light scuffing to the sides and around the base of the feet but in essence a good honest piece of furniture.
