Lot 121 , A Chinese limestone seated figure of Buddha, Northern Wei dynasty (386-535AD), total height 24cm
A Chinese limestone seated figure of Buddha, Northern Wei dynasty (386-535AD), the figure with pendulous lobes and wearing jewellery and carved in relief to an arched panel, mounted on a Qing dynasty zitan stand, the arched back with scrolled cresting and double lotus base, total height 24cm
Estimate £400-600
The carving is made of limestone which has blackened with age and is obviously a fragment removed from a larger carving and therefore has some old indentations and chips around the edge which have mellowed down, general scuffing to the surface but the figure of Buddha appears to be complete and the wood stand itself has some filler to an old crack in the wood to the back and has some chip losses to the lotus petals at the top of the base where the limestone carving is inset, there is also a chip to the bottom of the foot which has had some old filler repair to it.
