Chamberlain, Neville (1869- 9th Nov.1940) - Manuscript letter, signed, dated Oct 10 1940. One page, 7 x 4.5in., on 11, Downing Street notepaper, corrected to Highfield Park, Heckfield, Basingstoke. To his cousin Gertrude Bowen (née Chamberlain) advising he had turned down "a very high honour" stating "The verdict that so cut short my public career came very unexpectedly - and indeed I did not at first realise its significance. But now I know I can't do the work and have accepted what is inevitable without bitterness. Least you should think I have been unduly neglected, I will tell you in confidence that I was offered a very high honour indeed, but I refused it. "Mr Chamberlain" was good enough for my father and its good enough for me I want no consolation prizes except such letters as yours", another, signed, dated 28th May 1940.
