Lot 595 , Follower of Charles Jervas, oil, head and shoulder portrait of a young gentleman (Palmes family)

Follower of Charles Jervas, oil, head and shoulder portrait of a young gentleman (Palmes family)

Follower of Charles Jervas (Irish c. 1675-1739)
oil on canvas
Portrait of a young gentleman, by repute a member of the Palmes family, wearing a powdered periwig, brown gown and a white cravat
29 x 23in., oval
Estimate £1,000-1,500

Oil on canvas with an old reline, slight undulation showing to the canvas, looks to have been cleaned some years ago and since then has attracted some dirt, some very slight tiny paint flaking towards 8 o'clock and some tiny white flecks of white paint running down the right hand side as if someone had painted a wall nearby with a roller brush. A fine but stable craquelure running throughout the work, some slight patching to the left of his face where there may well be some light retouching. Housed in a rather tatty period gilt gesso frame, inscription verso listing the sitter as a member of the Palmes family.
