Lot 647 , A George III mahogany serpentine chest, W.3ft 4in.

A George III mahogany serpentine chest, W.3ft 4in.

A George III mahogany serpentine chest, two long drawers above a single deep drawer modelled as two drawers between part fluted reeded sides, on shaped bracket feet, W.3ft 4in.
Estimate £300-500

The caddy top to this chest does not feel entirely correct for the piece although it has clearly been in place for many years, the top has a fair amount of undulation, patched repairs to both back corners and to the front right corner, in addition there are some fairly deep old scratches, circular water rings and a water stain running in a depression that runs close to the front for almost the entire width of the piece, colour to the carcass and drawer fronts is a flatter duller brown than the top but should repolish to good effect, handles are later, various handles have been fitted over the years including what look like large knob handles, in addition there are patches approx. 2 inches in from the current handles and filled holes where handles have been mounted at another time, probably infact where loop handles were once fitted, escutcheons also are later, some horizontal splitting through the drawer fronts, notably second drawer from top on the right hand side through the handle, also some cockbeading missing on the right side of this drawer, third drawer down has splitting running from the left side just past the centre and base drawer has splitting running almost across the whole width of the drawer, some further filling, restaining and patching to the lower right sides of the bottom two drawers and smaller repairs elsewhere, foot has typical wear but nothing severe, both sides with vertical splitting, overall this piece has seen many alterations over the years particularly to the handles and does require a varying degree of restoration which is reflected in the estimate.
