§ Frank Cadogan Cowper (1877-1958)
watercolour,
'The Young Duchess', Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours label verso, inscribed 'F. H. Pyman Esq.'; and another bearing the title and artist's name and address in the artist's hand,
signed and dated 1917,
27.5 x 19in.
Estimate £10,000-15,000
Note: Frank Cadogan Cowper was known as the last of the Pre-Raphaelites. He painted an almost identical version of this work in oils in 1919, entitling it 'Vanity', echoing the title of his RA diploma work executed in 1907.
Very good untouched condition, possibly painted onto vellum as the work has a certain glow to it, the ground paper or vellum is showing fairly extensive undulation which again would be more typical for vellum rather than paper, colours remain strong, one or two small dirt specks although many of these are on the inside of the glass rather than on the work itself, possibly a slight flaw or retouch in the scrollwork near the top right corner, otherwise appears to be in very good original condition. Signed and dated lower left, housed in its original gilt slip but probably a later outer frame. Original artists label has been retained verso.
Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Gorringes Conditions of Sale.
