Henry Barraud (1811-1874)
oil on canvas,
Portrait of the racehorse 'Nicholon by Orlando-Muscouileu Dam by Camel', foaled 1857, sold to Napoleon III,
signed,
20.25 x 24in., canvas torn
Estimate £800-1,200

Oil on original canvas with the obvious dramatic tear running upwards from the horses head, the tear runs for approx. 8 inches in a zig-zag fashion with lines to each side however all of the canvas is present there are no losses other than in the threads of the tear, otherwise there are a number of scattered dents and tears throughout the work the largest being a 1 inch vertical tear to the left in the stable doorway, other short scratches are mostly in the paint but some do penetrate through the canvas, the paint itself is very dirty and will certainly improve enormously with a clean, there is some fine but stable craquelure particularly in the wall above the horses saddle and down across the bottom in line with the hooves, no sign of any overpainting signed on the right at 4 o'clock, housed in probably the original slim gilt frame, fully inscribed verso along with a framers label for Biggs & Son.
Comes for sale from a local private house.
A handsome painting but obviously in need of fairly extensive restoration.
