coloured engraving,
Map of the Maris Pacifici, 1589,
15.25 x 21in.
Estimate £500-800
Not laid down, margins slightly cropped, a 2 inch wide strip applied to the back of the work, the fold appears to have almost torn all the way through particularly notable at the bottom 3 inches where there has clearly been some tearing and loss of paper, approx, 1 inch of margin showing beyond the plate mark, colouring certainly old though probably not original, a rather crude orange has been used to delineate separation of regions just below the title cartouche, some scattered dirt marks along with some foxing.
In an old Hogarth frame, no labels verso. Back printed in Latin.
See additional photographs on website for back of the map.
