Lot 1280 , John Glover (1767-1849) River landscape with figures loading a boat, 18 x 23in.
John Glover (1767-1849)
watercolour on paper,
River landscape with figures loading a boat,
18 x 23in.
Estimate £200-300
Attributed to Glover on the basis of style of execution and period of work, furthermore this frame has been found on other works by Glover, pointing to it also being the original frame.
Painted in sepia tones on a buff paper with monochrome colouring for the dark of the trees etc. One or two fine tears pushed through the paper, notably a small tear towards the top left corner, another finer approx. half inch crease / tear to the right of this and a further 2 inch crease / tear in the trees below the abbey ruins, probably also a little faded, perhaps three fine scuff lines running vertically through the water above the figures in the boat, paper showing some undulation so thought not to be laid down, no signs of any signature, as stated in what is thought to be the original gilt gesso frame which retains the original gilding but is now a little chipped and dusty.
