A Chinese 'dragon and phoenix' bowl, Xuande six character mark and possibly of the period, the interior painted with a closed mouth five-claw dragon and phoenix medallion within a double circle, the exterior with a confronting dragon and phoenix chasing a flaming jewel amid scrolling clouds, above a band of lappets, the circular foot with double circle to the exterior, the six character mark to the base within a double circle, the cobalt-blue with a purple tint, with areas of black spots (heaping and piling) under a bubble-suffused glaze, enamelled in yellow to the interior and exterior possibly later, 19.5cm, museum restoration, scratching to glaze all over

In natural daylight, a deep purplish-blue can be seen on the lappets and interior medallion, shading to a brilliant blue wash on the exterior phoenix and dragon.The underglaze blue lines are blurred by the bubble-suffused glaze.
