A stylish 1930's Art Deco Cartier parcel gilt silver cigar/cigarette box with interior inscription relating to Major-General G.N. Macready, of rectangular form, with vertical and horizontal reeded decoration and hinged lid opening to reveal two interior compartments, hallmarks for Jacques Cartier, London, 1938, stamped, Cartier, London to base, 40 oz, 8.75in.
Estimate £400-600

Inscription on interior of the lid reads, "Major-General G.N. Macready, C.M.G.,D.S.O.,O.B.E.,M.C., Moscow Conference, 1941."
This box refers to the 1941 Moscow Conference, which he attended as Assistant Chief of the Imperial General Staff during World War II. This Three Power Conference took place from September 29 to October 1 1941, and laid the basis for lend-lease.

The interior has two compartments (no lining). The dimensions are 277mm by 177mm by 25mm.
There are numerous light surface scratches to the top of the lid. Some extremely light scratches to the interior of the lid. There is also a dark mark which runs across the top, over the hinge and across the base, quite possible caused by a rubber band being placed around the box at some point. There are 4 minor dings to the right side of the box. The base again, has numerous surface scratches which are more prominent than those on the top of the lid. General overall condition is otherwise good. Marks clear.
No visible numbers. The engraving appears to be on a thin plate, approx. 1mm in thickness, which is part of the lid construction, i.e. not one solid piece.
